A NEEDLE IN THE DESERT exhibition at Casa África

Casa África hosted this project by photographer and documentary filmmaker Héctor Mediavilla, with whom we had previously collaborated.

The exhibition brought together an audiovisual piece and three photographic series that explored the contradictions emerging in the development processes of certain countries in the Global South.

Focus on Niger

The project focused on Niger—a country often overlooked and frequently confused with Nigeria—which has consistently ranked at the bottom of the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI).

The photographic series A Needle in the Desert, The Abdou Salèye Sisters, and Haoua Ide documented stories unfolding around the FIMA (International Festival of African Fashion), the most important fashion event in Niger.

Fashion, Identity, and Development

FIMA represents both the possibility and the ambition of building a strong African fashion industry capable of reaching international markets and contributing to the economic development of Sub-Saharan countries—including some of the world’s poorest, such as Niger. It reflects a broader vision of a continent moving toward a culture of peace and development.

Held in the heart of Africa, the festival highlights the creativity and craftsmanship of African designers, offering them a platform for international recognition. It also serves as a meeting point for models, stylists, artisans, and both emerging and established designers, fostering collaboration and professional networks.

Stories Behind the Images

Mediavilla’s photographs and audiovisual work were produced between 2013 and 2017 in Niamey and Agadez. His perspective captures both the preparation and unfolding of the festival, while also delving into the personal stories of three young Nigerien models who took part in the event.

The exhibition also included selected images from their social media, highlighting their self-representation in the digital sphere. A previously unreleased 3.5-minute audiovisual piece emphasized the contrast between the cultural vibrancy of the festival and its surrounding context.

Ultimately, the project shed light on the challenges faced by young people in Niger as they strive to pursue their dreams within a context marked by economic hardship and rapid social change.
