S.A.P.E. exhibition at Cantor Art Gallery

This exhibition, presented at the Cantor Art Gallery in Worcester, brought together a selection of photographs by Héctor Mediavilla exploring the world of the Sapeurs—members of the Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes in the Republic of Congo.

Through striking portraits and intimate scenes, the project examines how style, elegance, and performance become powerful forms of self-expression and resistance in postcolonial contexts. The Sapeurs transform dress into a language—one that challenges economic hardship and redefines identity, dignity, and aspiration.

Held in conjunction with the conference Rethinking the Afropolitan, the exhibition contributed to a broader reflection on contemporary African identities, urban cultures, and the ways in which notions of belonging, modernity, and representation are continuously being reimagined across the continent and its diasporas.
