PENELOPES catalogue
Héctor Mediavilla’s audiovisual project immerses us in the silent intimacy of women who wait for their migrant husbands to return back home. Contemporary Penelopes, invisible in their everyday lives, weave and unweave their days while their husbands migrate with the promise of a return that almost never comes. The Homeric myth becomes a mirror of a Mexican reality: empty courtyards, dimly lit rooms, framed portraits of absent men, celebrations with one chair missing.
The catalogue gathers around forty images and several testimonies that compose a choral narrative of solitude, resilience, and dignity. Each photograph reveals the discreet strength of the women who sustain the household, who raise children, who work, who continue to wait even when waiting itself is painful. The silence of the images is accompanied by recorded voices: first-person accounts that add texture to the photography and transform it into a living document.
The exhibition is not only contemplative: in its participatory piece Who Have You Left Behind?, Mediavilla invites migrant visitors to bring a photograph of what they left in their countries. Thus, the show expands beyond Mexico and Catalonia, becoming a transnational dialogue on the shared experience of absence and distance.
