AFROTOPIA IN ARANTZAZU

A Day Dedicated to Africa

A full-day programme dedicated to Africa returned on June 5th, 2021 at Gandiaga Topagunea in Arantzazu, held in commemoration of Africa Day (May 25th). Running from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM, the event offered a perspective on Africa—both in Sub-Saharan regions and within the diaspora—highlighting creativity, the central role of women, cultural identity beyond imposed assimilation, and the dreams and utopias shaping a better future.

Film, Talks, and Exhibition

Following the screening of the short documentary Women Hold Up the Sky, writer Agnès Agboton (Benin) shared her experience as an African woman living in Catalonia for over 25 years.

African cinema was also featured with the award-winning Kenyan film Supa Modo, screened in the afternoon. Blending optimism and magic with the emotional story of a young girl who dreams of becoming a superhero, the film was introduced and discussed by Beatriz Leal Riesco, curator and programmer of African film festivals.

In the foyer, the photographic series Afrotopia was presented, featuring works by young artists from Mali, Niger, and Senegal. Through their images, they offered personal perspectives on environmental issues, globalization, the role of women, youth, work, and everyday life.

Photographer and curator Héctor Mediavilla also led a guided tour of the exhibition around midday.
